SATURDAY was a big day on the Okehampton Golf Club calendar as players competed for the club championship. The start sheet was completely full and the conditions were extremely challenging with squally showers throughout the day. However the standard of the course was well up to scratch and some excellent golf ensued. Gareth Holt is the new club champion after he had a superb morning round of gross 67 and followed it up with a wonderful gross 69 in the afternoon. This gave him the winning score of 136 which no one could come close to matching. Gareth certainly coped with the difficult conditions better than anyone else so deserving to be the new club champion. In second place was John Mansell with a morning round of 76, followed by an improved afternoon round of 73, making a gross 149. Third was Del Owen with a first round of 76 a second of 78 totalling 154 and fourth was Andy Kirby with a 76 and 79 making 155. The Hutching Cup was the prize for the net scores and again Gareth Holt won this with his two excellent rounds which gave him a net 64 and net 66 totalling 130. Second was Barry Hodges with a net 71 and 63 for 134. Third was Jim Dunlop net 68 and 66 totalling 134, and fourth was Andy Shapland with a 66 and 69 making 135. The Stuart Wilson Trophy was the 18 hole net championship prize this was won by Ollie Kirby gross 84 net 61; second Steve Govier gross 77 net 65; third Bob Davies gross 83 net 66 on the back nine from Harry Hawking gross 73 net 66. The Leonard Tankard is for the gross score of any player over 55 playing in the 36 hole championship. Winning this was Graham Moysey with a gross 77 and 83 making 160 and second was Barry Hodges with his total of gross 85 and 77 totalling 162. The ladies started their week with a wonderful win in the Sheelagh Creasy Cup. They played Churston at home. Sue Glanville. who had a tremendous match only to lose it on the 18th hole; Maureen Willcocks won an emphatic 6-5; Pat Kirby won 2-1; Doris Jewell had another convincing win by 6-5,Sally Griffin won 5-3, Maureen Howe had a fantastic win of 9-7 and captain Eileen Piper also won 4-3. Okehampton Ladies won by a superb 14 points to three. The ladies Wednesday competition was an aggregate Stableford; the conditions were tough so scoring was low. Making the best of it were Penny Deakin and Marcia Jones with a total of 60 points and second were Lyn Hazelton and Mo Huggins with 59. Winning the individual silver division was Lyn Hazelton who had 33, second was Marcia Jones on 31 and winning the bronze division was Kay King with 32 and second was Mary Keir with 30.
