A HERB garden has been restored at the Bedford Hotel, on the site of the original medieval herb garden used by Tavistock's monks.

As part of the 12 month project, what was once the monastery garden at Tavistock Abbey has been restored.

To ensure the authenticity of the garden, foreign flowers or herbs were not planted, only those that would have been found in an English medieval monastic garden.

The monks would have used the garden for ingredients for their mead and various potions, which they would have prepared in the still tower adjoining the garden.

It is believed the site may have been used as a garden ever since the monastery was first dedicated.

The garden had been overgrown and untidy before the project began and trees had to be cut down on the canal side.

The garden will now be open for hotel guests to walk around. Work will be ongoing because the walls on two sides of the garden are original.

The work was undertaken by Tavistock gardener Laurence Pawlik.

'We get an awful lot of visitors to the hotel who say it is one of their favourite gardens because it is so peaceful,' he said.
