PLANNING permission has been granted for a motor repair garage on the site of the old BP petrol station in Tavistock's Ford Street.

West Devon's planning committee recently heard that the application was acceptable to officers, given the previous use of the site, but there were objections from residents who were concerned about parking in the area.

They felt employee and customer cars could over-flow from the garage on to streets which were already over-subscribed for parking.

Cllr Dick Eberlie said he would have liked to see the site used for residents' parking and thought conditions should be applied regarding car parking on the site.

'Local people don't want any more, they have too many cars there already — let's get as many on the site as we can,' he said.

The committee granted permission for a workshop with ancillary car sales, subject to conditions concerning storage, parking, exit and entrances off and on the site.
