LADIES and gentlemen who have received one of the highest honours Tavistock can give could soon be commemorated on a special board.
Members of the town council's finance committee heard last Tuesday that Cllr Ted Sherrell had suggested a board be erected in the council chamber or town hall to record the names of Honoured Burgesses, in a similar pattern used to record the names of past mayors.
Councillors endorsed the concept and thought the board could be sited at the 'chair' end of the chamber.
Cllr Sherrell said that the title of Honoured Burgess was the 'highest honour' that Tavistock could bestow on anyone.
He said: 'It is given to ladies and gentlemen who have served this community with distinction, dedication and integrity for a very long time.
'With this in mind it is right and proper that we record the the names of these good people in a public place, so that future generations will be aware of the great contribution they made to Tavistock and its citizens.'
The matter will return to the council for a final decision when costs of creating the board have been estimated.
