A SPECIAL party to raise funds for a Horrabridge teenager who lost her leg in a tragic accident in March has raised more than £1,630 towards a new hi-tech prosthetic limb. Friends and family are hoping to raise £10,000 for a new leg for 19-year-old Nikki Bitton, a student at Bournemouth University. The party which launched the fundraising campaign was held at the Ordulph Arms at the end of April. Barbara Bitton, Nikki?s mother, said: ?It was absolutely brilliant, there must have been well over 200 people there and so many people were putting in extra money apart from on the door. ?And we need to say a special thanks to Andy Coad from the Ordulph, and his staff ? they were fantastic.? Barbara said she and her family have been deeply touched by the reaction of people following the publication of Nikki?s story in the Times and other newspapers. ?It?s been absolutely amazing ? it?s really restored my faith in human nature, to think there are people out there that are prepared to help. People have been very generous.? Barbara is now planning a coffee morning to boost the campaign, which will be held in Horrabridge old village hall on Saturday June 10, between 10am and noon. There will be refreshments and fundraising activities ? all are welcome. And a group of enthusiastic fundraisers from Bere Alston has also stepped in to help. The Hair Bare Bunch has already raised £3,600 for Cancer Research and the Special Care Baby Unit in Bristol, plus a further £3,600 for new wheelchairs for two Bere Alston children. Sam Kendall said having seen the article about Nikki in the Times, they decided they would like to help and will be getting together with the family to plan some fundraising events this summer.
