TAVISTOCK volunteer worker Peter Meikle is taking fundraising to new heights in a gruelling challenge in Nepal.

Peter will spend two weeks trekking nine hours a day and sleeping under canvas in a bid to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Through his work at the Triangle Centre in Tavistock Hospital, which is an outreach location for St Luke?s Hospice in Plymouth, Peter has seen first hand the amazing work of Marie Curie Cancer Care nurses.

After a twelve hour flight to Kathmandu next week, he will face an eight-hour bus journey to reach Pokhara ? the trek?s starting point.

From there he will spend eight days walking before reaching his final destination ? the base camp at Mount Machapuchire which is 4,200 metres above sea level.

The trip follows months of planning and is the result of concerted fundraising.

Most of the £2,750 trek fee has been put up by Peter himself with the help of events such as a skittles evening at the Fox and Hounds in Bridestowe where he raised £400 and a tombola at Debenhams in Plymouth which brought in another £500.

Peter has already banked £4,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care and is hoping to reach his target of £5,000 by the end of the trek.
