WHITCHURCH Wayfarers Ladies cricket team travelled to Sandford for a league fixture. Whitchurch batted first, and against accurate bowling carved out a total of 120, with contributions from Gaynor Pollard 27, Cindy Capeling 22, Jenny Kaye 19. It was always going to be difficult to contain a strong Sandford XI who notched up the required runs to win with 7 wickets remaining off 26 overs. Bowlers were Cathy Griffin 7-0-21-1, Becky Chapman 5-1-22-1, Ange Hunt 4-1-16-0, Jenny Kaye 2-1-13-0. In contrast on Saturday the ladies played a friendly against a newly formed Plymouth XI at Central Park. Put into bat by captain Gillian Northey Plymouth, with only two experienced bats, made 87 all out of 23 overs. Laura Armstrong took three wickets and two catches. Coraly Medland once again bowled very accurately 5-3-10-1, Cathy Griffin 5-2-6-3, Ange Hunt 2-1-4-0. Whitchurch used this fixture for players to gain confidence and experience. Jo Austin, 15, looked increasingly comfortable at the crease and Sue Pilkington scored a flamboyant 25 before being run out. Joined by Jenny Kay, 14, Coraly Medland 5 no and Gillian Northey 4 no, Whitchurch easily won the match in 13 overs. Ali Evans once again excelled in the field and Debbie Taylor made an impressive debut as wicket keeper. A good team spirit, fun and skills improvement are the ingredients for Whitchurch ladies. New members will be made very welcome ? come along to the Friday practice night at the club.
