NEVER mind the mud, it was fun, fun, fun for the cubs, scouts and beavers who joined the Camp 2000 at Chaddlehanger near Tavistock last weekend.

Throughout the country similar camps were taking place involving thousands of children, with special events timed for Saturday night, 'The Big Bang', when simultaneous celebrations and a message from the chief scout was read out.

District Commissioner Sandra Johnson said: 'It was a marvellous camp, everything went well and all the kids seemed to have enjoyed themselves.

'I don't know whether the parents will be quite so happy with all the dirty washing though!'

All types of activities were laid on for the youngsters, including canoeing, theatre workshops, climbing, sumo wrestling and archery.

There was a craft barn with lots of different skills to be learned under the guidance of visiting craftsmen and women.

And there was a visit from Tavistock's town crier Bob Rose in his full ceremonial regalia, who led the group round the camp 'Pied Piper'-style.

An 'It's a Knockout' was laid on for the Monday afternoon, in which teams of beavers, cubs and scouts competed in a 'gun run'-style competition.

'It was absolutely brilliant,' said Sandra.

'It was the first district camp we have done, but we couldn't have done it without the help of Ruth and Jim Cole who lent us the land — they were wonderful.'

Taking part were youngsters from Bere Alston, Buckland Monachorum, Horrabridge, Lifton, Princetown, Tavistock, Wallham Valley and Whitchurch.
