The annual Mary Tavy bonfire night, organised by the Jubilee Group and the trustees of the Recreation Ground, is set to take place on the recreation ground on November 1.
The free event is due to start at 5pm and has become a tradition with locals and not-so-locals of all ages.
There will be lots of activities, especially for children, with luminous balloons, a sparklers spectacular and glow in the dark games.
The event takes place mainly on the recreation ground but some activities will be held in the Coronation Hall where the judging will take place.
Anyone can enter a Guy. It can be made by an individual or family group and it doesn’t have to represent Guy Fawkes himself – previous entries have included a highwayman, a tiger and a mother with her child.
The Guys will be added to the giant bonfire and the path to the bonfire will be lit by carved pumpkins, which are also welcome from anyone and will attract prizes for the best.
Visitors are invited to attend in fancy dress, perhaps wearing something appropriate to bonfire night or Hallowe’en.
There will also be hot soup, a hog roast and other food, a licensed bar, a raffle, music and a firework display to complete the evening.
The cost of the fireworks and other costs of the event are covered by sponsorship from local businesses.
Ali Fife Cook said that it is the generosity of local businesses and individuals which ensures that the bonfire night is and can continue to be a free event for the public.
She added: ‘If the weather is awful and the event has to be postponed, it will take place one week later, but the organisers – the Mary Tavy Jubilee Group and the Trustees of the Recreation Ground – are keeping their fingers crossed for fine weather. The Jubilee Group is a local charity dedicated to community development, environmental improvement and heritage.’
