WHAT better way to celebrate a 21st birthday than raise £21,000? This is the target for the North Dartmoor Friends of Hospicecare ? and they need your help to make the cash gift come true.

The Friends? volunteer fundraiser, Edward Sweet from Winkleigh, is calling on the whole community to support the challenge.

?So many people have been helped in this area by Hospicecare,? he said.

?We are not asking for money ? we are asking if people would hold an event to raise money. I?d like to do one event in each village in the area. That would be great.?

There are around a dozen volunteers in the group. They are dedicated to supporting Hospicecare community sister Gay Hill who works out of Castle Hospital, Okehampton. She covers an area that ranges from Bridestowe to Iddesleigh and Moretonhampstead on behalf of the Exeter-based charity Hospicecare.

Mrs Hill has been in her present post for 12 years and almost nine years ago the Friends was set up to help raise funds.

?As Hospicecare is 21-years-old this year we decided to set ourselves a challenge,? said Mr Sweet.

?An event can take the form of a coffee morning, a concert, bring and buy ? in fact, any ideas people may have. North Dartmoor Friends will be there to help with posters, publicity or hands-on support,? he said.

?Hospicecare is a local charity supporting people with life threatening illnesses, and their relatives and carers. Hospicecare nurses provide specialist care and practical support to people in their own homes.?

For severe symptom control patients are admitted to Hospicecare?s in-patient unit.
