The Calstock Parish twinning Association have just hosted another highly successful visit by their friends from St Thuriau, Britanny. The visit started with a short reception with mulled Cornish apple juice and cider at Calstock Village Hall and a welcome by the chairman of the Calstock Parish Council Jerome Irons. There was a trip to Morwellham Quay and the mine and head curator, Anthony Power, gave an excellent introductory talk about the venue in French and in costume by the waterwheel (pictured left). Glorious weather allowed a picnic outside and lots of people dressed up in period costume. The visitors were then treated to a trip down river in the MV Gloria, which set sail amidst a great burst of Breton songs and eventually landed them at Calstock. A special event was held at Harrowbarrow and Metherell Village Hall with food and entertainment by twinners both sides of the Channel and Cornish traditional music and dance group Hevva. Gifts were exchanged and spontaneous singing and dancing took place until midnight! Next year will see the 20th anniversary of the twinning between the Calstock Parish Association and St Thuriau and so special events are expected during the visit to Brittany.
