THE first week of the bowling season involved Tavistock Bowling Club in two matches; a Tuesday evening men?s section county trophy fixture against a strong New Plymouth team and on Saturday a mixed home match against local rivals Callington. New Plymouth won the Tuesday evening match 91-57, thanks to their winning on three of the four rinks played. Tavistock team results: skip Roy Northam and his squad of Bill Ashe, Barry Chappell and Brian Davis, who was playing his first match after a two year break, won 18-12, thanks to them picking up seven shots during the last five ends. Skip Mike Allen and his team of Vic Stacey, Norman Paramor and Mike Felles, playing his first game for the club, lot 17-24. Skip Malcolm Bloomer and his crew of Walter Meek, David Perry and Brian Preece lost 16-17 thanks to their opponents winning four of the last five ends. Skip Clive Jago with his team of John Smith, Der Saunders and Ernie Piper, came up against a strong squad and finished the evening losing 6-38 after scoring on only four of the 21 ends. Saturday?s friendly against Callington resulted in a 138-88 win for Tavistock when they won all six rinks played. Skip Malcolm Bloomer and his ream of Anne Brown, Lauri Smith and Marlene Paramor won 21-16, while skip Marion Allen and her squad of Henny Bawden, Barry Chappell and Bill Ashe notched up a 26-13 victory. Club captain, Norman Paramor and his crew of Ray Meneer, Vic Stacey and Freda Isacc won 20-15 and skip John Smith and his team of Walter Meek, Gordon Northey and Pat Hoar came from being eight shots behind at the 14th end to achieve a narrow 22-20 victory. Skip Der Saunders and his squad of Roy Gill, Joan Northey and Sue Silcox, playing her first game for the club, clung on to win 23-16, despite losing all of the last four ends. Skip Browse and her team of Derek Bradford, Ernie Piper and Brian Preece clocked up the biggest win of the day when they achieved an 18-shot winning margin with a 26-8 scoreline.
