TAVISTOCK Library has been chosen as the next to launch Devon Library Services' Free Fridays programme.
Designed to help jobseekers affected by the recent introduction of Universal Jobmatch, or anyone likely to be affected by the planned introduction of the new Universal Credit welfare system, Free Fridays extends the normal free computer session time at the library on Fridays from 30 minutes to two hours — or longer, if filling in a benefit application form requires that.
An extra member of staff will be on duty to help people set up e-mail accounts or help with other computer-related problems, and a representative from Devon County Council's Adult and Community Learning organisation will be on hand to advise anyone who needs access to free computer training or preparation for work classes.
Library manager Helen Cooper said: 'We are delighted to have been chosen to introduce this programme.
'Free Fridays will be a real boon to anyone who does not have access to their own computer, but must apply on-line for jobs or benefits.
'We've always tried to put the library at the heart of the community, and this is our way of doing our best to help the people of Tavistock affected by these government changes to the welfare system.'
Although designed to help jobseekers and benefit applicants, the two-hour session time applies to anyone using the libraries on Fridays. The programme starts tomorrow (Friday).
