FREE parking will be available in Callington on December 7, to encourage people to shop in the town on a day of Christmas festivities.

Callington Town Council has negotiated with Cornwall Council to provide free parking in the New Road car parks for the duration of the day.

The day will include a Christmas craft fair in the town hall, Victorian market in the Pannier Market, switching on of the Christmas lights and carol singing, a family disco and a special Santa run in support of CHICKS.

Callington portreeve Denise Winfindale said: 'Councillors agreed to pick up the cost involved in making parking free for that day to support the town.

'Hopefully this will encourage more people into town on this day to enjoy the events and support the businesses.

'We think this would be an ideal opportunity for traders to promote their businesses by decorating them and having some lights on.

'I know that everyone is working hard to make sure that people shop locally to keep the town alive.'
