Tavistock U12s 35 Exeter Chiefs U12s 7 WITH a number of key players located in different positions following last week?s defeat at the hands of Launceston, Tavistock started out strongly with good ball handling and effective tackling. A strengthened scrum with Jonty Newton at number eight in the first half and Sam Northmore in the second proved effective against the stronger Chiefs pack. Dominic Dewson was particularly good at making ground in breaks from the scrum and rucks. Through winning the ball on numerous occasions the backs were able to demonstrate their quick and accurate passing skills to effect. Rhys Davies was in superb form delivering four tries by weaving through gaps in the Chiefs? defences from within the Tavistock half. His efforts impacted on a scoreline which does not reflect the balanced nature of the game. Much of the play was in the Tavistock half with the denial of tries for the Chiefs being achieved through strong defence by spirited Tavistock forwards and some effective last minute clearances from the backs. The remaining Tavistock try was taken over the line by Jonty Newton from a series of fast passes from Frazer Bayliss through Rhys Davies. Well into the second half any Exeter score had been denied. A slow decision on passing by Tavistock enabled an enterprising Chiefs player to intercept the pass, break through the gap and sprint nearly the complete length of the pitch with the Tavistock backs in pursuit to win a well deserved try. All the tries were successfully converted. Despite the score this was an an even contest played in a competitive and good humoured spirit. l Training next Sunday at Tavistock RFC ground between 10am and noon.
