Newton Abbot Colts 13 Tavistock Colts 26 TAVISTOCK won a well deserved league victory in a fast, exciting game. It took the away side 20 minutes to lose the journey from their legs by which time Newton Abbot had converted two penalties. The home side went further ahead at a five metre scrum when their scrum half sold an outrageous dummy and wriggled through three players to touch down under close to the posts. A Euan McCall penalty was soon followed by good work from scrum half Euan Smith who harrowed his opposite number at a home scrum and quickly fed the resultant ball for centre Mark Webber to outflank the defence and touch down in the corner. McCall closed the gap further with a penalty for a ruck infringement for a half time score of 13-11 to the home side. Tavistock's forward dominance increased throughout the second half but they struggled to gain field position - on the three occasions they did so, three tries ensued. Two five metre scrums each resulted in a try for flanker Tom Friend. Tavistock's final try came after an offload in the tackle from winger Jamie Hall before the defence held up progress on the line. The referee judged that prop Jason Ward had not quite reached the line but flanker Friend picked up and dived over the line to make sure with his hat-trick try which earned him the man of the match award. Tavistock's threequarters showed some slick moves and are gaining in confidence. The pack is starting to work as a unit in all areas with the influence of No 8 Martin Ryland inceasing every game. Next week's game is away to Launceston Colts.
