TAVISTOCK is in pole position for the start of this year's Formula One Grand Prix season.

Just two days before the flag goes down on the first race in Melbourne, the car which Scot David Coulthard drove last year to win the British Grand Prix and take fourth place in the drivers' championship, will be in Safeway.

Simon Allen of Tavistock Tyres has organised the visit of the West McLaren Mercedes to promote not only his company and Safeway, but also tyre safety awareness with free checks.

'This will be the first time Formula One has ever been to Tavistock and it will be as close as 99 per cent of the population will ever be able to get to one of these cars,' he said.

People will not be allowed to sit in the car, since even without its engine and gearbox it is valued at a figure in excess of £2 million.

Instead would-be race drivers can try their hand at two F1 simulators, and win F1 merchandisingprizes.

Also up for grabs will be a pair of the rare tickets for this year's Silverstone Grand Prix.

'Tickets are few and far between this year, because the event was rained off last year and rather than get a refund, many race-goers had their tickets reallocated,' said Mr Allen.

The car will be in Safeway at Tavistock on Friday March 2.
