A SEAT on Hatherleigh Town Council has become vacant following the resignation of one of its members. Denise Herrod-Taylor, who has twice been mayor of Hatherleigh, has decided to step down from the council in order to spend more time at home. Mrs Herrod-Taylor, who was also a former member of West Devon Borough Council and Exbourne Parish Council, said: ?I am 81 now and I have to look after an invalid husband. I find I am not quite as effective as I was, and I thought instead of sitting in the seat and blocking other people coming in, someone younger with more energy would do a better job that I can.? Mrs Herrod-Taylor said she was ?very proud? to have served Hatherleigh, a town she considered ?quite unique?. ?It?s small but the people are extremely generous. It?s not a rich area but no matter what charity is out and about, people will give all the time. I think it?s quite a wonderful place to be,? she said. Town clerk Rose Lock said a new member would be co-opted onto the council, as not enough electors had asked for an election to take place. The issue is to be discussed when the council next meets on August 9.
