IT WILL be up, up and away in Simmons Park if Okehampton Town Council gives the go-ahead for Devon and Somerset Balloons to launch hot air balloons from the site.

Operations manager of the company Peter Bird said a number of new locations were being sought and Simmons Park was particularly beautiful.

'We have several people from the Okehampton area who have booked to fly and it would be really nice if we could launch from the park itself,' he said.

'At the moment we are using a farmer's field on the outskirts of the town.'

Devon and Cornwall Balloons has been in business for 15 years and flies from all over the South West.

Mr Bird said hot air balloons very much fitted in with the image and character of Simmons Park.

'It is a lovely thing to see both from the passengers' point of view and the general public who are having a stroll through the park. We would be looking at using the park about ten times a year.'

Town councillor Gill Lower said it would be something different and if it brought more people into the park then it was a good thing.

'The more the park can be used the better, as long as it is not detrimental to the park or the people,' she said.
