ONE of the main footpaths in Tavistock's Meadows will be improved during the next few months, as part of a major upgrading project.

The path between Westbridge and Jubilee Arch is to be completely renewed, in a project costing between £80,000 and £100,000.

Town council works superintendent Wayne Southall said: 'This is the main path which runs along by the river, where the Goose Fair vehicles park.

'It's got to the stage where there have been so many repairs in the past that the ground is uneven right the way through and with vehicles using it, it's a permanent maintenance issue.'

Mr Southall said a new base and hard-wearing top layer would be laid down, with the camber adapted so that water would run off towards the river, rather than collecting on both sides of the path, as it does at present.

The project is being put out for tender over the next few weeks. It is envisaged that the work will be carried out some time in April, and should take about three weeks in total.

Mr Southall said the path would be open for the majority of the time, but would have to be closed for approximately three days when the top layer is laid by machine.
