A NEW venture is being set up in Okehampton, aimed specially at younger children who fancy airing their vocal talents and even earning a little extra pocket money!

All Saints Church is about to establish its own junior choir and would like to hear from children aged seven upwards.

Auditions have already taken place ? but there is still room for some enthusiastic youngsters to come along and see how they like being part of the team.

The Rev Stephen Cook, Rector of Okehampton, said: ?We are very excited about this project. Being part of a church choir is an excellent way for children to learn to sing ? and to learn about teamwork and the Christian faith.?

Mr Cook said the choir would be conducted by Linda Bellairs, who teaches at Okehampton College and would sing at three morning services a month.

?Choristers will receive a small fee, as is traditional, and outings and social activities such as picnics as well as fundraising events are planned,? said Mr Cook.

?This choir will give a lot to the children ? as well as being fun, as they get better, they will have the chance to add to their choir pay by singing at weddings etc.

?I believe Elton John, Robbie Williams and many other famous people began their careers this way ? it will also add a lot to our morning services.?

Mr Cook said there had been a good response to the idea so far, but he would still like to hear from any youngsters who would like to come along for an audition.

Music tackled by the choristers would be a broad cross-range of church music ? and potential choristers do not have to be churchgoers, although once in the choir they will attend services on a regular basis.

Practices will take place on early Friday evenings.

?From past experience, children really enjoy being part of a choir ? I?m sure they will have great fun being part of it,? said Mr Cook.
