TWO West Devon borough councillors are voicing their concerns about an increase in the number of pot holes in roads around Tavistock — and are appealing to residents to report pot holes to the relevant authorities.
The borough's member for Tavistock North Ward and Tavistock Town councillor John Sheldon said pot holes were dangerous to all road users, which included people crossing the road.
'However careful a driver you are, when filled with water under surface water, they can be impossible to avoid,' he said.
Borough councillor for Tavistock North Ward Jeff Moody said: 'I have had several complaints from members of the public about pot holes and the general state of roads in and around Tavistock. Even in the centre of Tavistock, the road surface in Duke Street is starting to break-up and potholes are developing.
'I am very concerned that the growing number of potholes could cause accidents and injuries or serious damage to motor vehicles. They can also be a disaster for the increasing numbers of cyclists using West Devon roads.'
Cllr Moody said he recently contacted County Highways and was told there was currently a £687-million backlog of repairs and that 'some of the minor roads are going to stay that way'.
He added: 'It is important that residents report any potholes to Devon County Council if they are concerned. However, the Old Launceston Road potholes were reported to highways three months ago and have not been repaired.'
The councillors are urging people to report any potholes to the Highway Authority at Devon County Council online or by phone in a bid to get them dealt with.
