A BURNT-out car and fly-tipping dumped at a popular site at Yelverton have caused anger.
An armchair was among the items left next to the burnt-out car in one of the aerodrome bays at Harrowbeer Airfield.
The vehicle was believed to have been set alight in the early hours of Friday, September 21 and Yelverton firefighters attended to extinguish the fire. A few days later someone took the opportunity to fly-tip their unwanted belongings next to it, see picture below.
One person took to social media to report the fly-tipping: ‘First a burnt out car, probably stolen, and then people adding to it by dumping some furniture. I don’t understand their mentality in spoiling such a lovely area.’
There have been a number of fly-tipping incidents over the past few months, including sofas, plastic waste, carpet and asbestos roofing dumped in the ‘rural gateway’ on the road to Horrabridge.
Despite fly-tipping being a criminal offence the incident should be reported in the first instance to the local authority or environmental health.
West Devon sector inspector Mark Sloman said: ‘Fly-tipping is anti-social behaviour and is a crime but is usually dealt with by environmental health. People should report an incident of fly-tipping to their local authority or environmental health first.’
West Devon Borough Council has an environmental protection team to investigate reports of fly-tipping.
Fly-tipping is dumping anything is anything unwanted, such as electrical goods, furniture and building waste, in a place that is not a licensed.
