Tavistock Ladies first 9 Penzance 4 TAVISTOCK knew they needed to win if they were to continue to put pressure on other teams in the league. The match opened with Sarah Barratt and Chloe Bassett for the home team running circles around the opposition. The quick thinking play of Laura Stapleton allowed the ball to be switched to Becky Lamb who scored the first goal of the match. The defence of Tavistock pushed up and the speed from Lisa Butler and Fiona Dunn resulted in the ball being intercepted early enough to be fed back up to the midfielders Emma White and Laura Armstrong. Barratt scored the second goal for Tavistock as she drove the ball into the D. Unfortunately the defence were outnumbered and this allowed Penzance to score two goals to equalise. Tavistock decided to pick the pace up on the pitch. Jo Gaspar and Judy Miller worked hard in the D but they just could not find the back of the net. Barratt scored to push Tavistock back into the lead. Tavistock played some really good hockey and the ball was being switched from player to player and through both sides of the pitch. Susannah Boulle held firm in defence and was able to break down most of the attacking play by Penzance on the left side of the pitch. Lamb scored her second goal of the match from a deflected short corner to make it to 4-2 to Tavistock. The opposition were awarded a short corner from which they scored and put Tavistock back under pressure at 4-3. The ball was constantly up in the opposition's D and Lamb was fed the ball from Bassett and she drove it into the 'D' along the base line to score a lovely goal for 5-3 up. Judy Miller scored the sixth before the half-time whistle. The second half saw Tavistock captain Fiona Dunn off the pitch due to an injury. Tavistock held their formation and were given numerous short corners and it was from one of these that Stapleton scored, taking it to 7-3. The opposition broke early after the push back and forced Tavistock to give away the softest of goals. Lamb scored her fourth goal of the match to make it 8-4. Not to be outdone and rewarded for all her efforts on the pitch, fellow forward Armstrong scored the final goal. Tavistock were pleased with how they played and it brings the team nearer to the top of the league.
