THEY came, they saw, they flipped their pancakes ? the children of class 4 at Okehampton Primary School took part in the town?s popular pancake race on Shrove Tuesday. The event, which has been a town tradition for almost ten years, almost fell flat last year because of rising insurance costs. But it was saved at the eleventh hour when new sponsors and insurers came forward to make it viable. Children from teacher Mrs Clark?s class were at the starting line in Red Lion Yard at 2pm, under starters orders from headteacher Brian Cunningham. A crowd of spectators gathered along the route to see nine-year-old Reuben crowned as overall winner after beating the three other heat-winners in the final dash for the line. ?They have been extremely excited and feel very proud they were chosen to take part, and so they have all been practising hard,? Mrs Clark said. The finishing tape was manned by Okehampton town clerk Don Bent and mayor Cllr Tony Leech, who also presented the prizes. The larger-than-life cartoon fox Doo Wap was also on hand to entertain the children and help them sing a selection of pancake songs. Sponsors Doo Wap made sure nobody was left out in celebrating the day, by giving away enough chocolate-filled Doo Wap crepes for the entire school.
