PUPILS from a West Devon primary school scored a big hit in a recent competition for children to create their own myths. Eighty children from Chagford School entered the event, organised by the town?s Big Red Sofa bookshop, which required them to imagine a mythical creature, create an image of it and write an account of its adventures. Among the judging panel was Oscar winning art director Alan Lee, renowned for his work on the Lord of the Rings films, Terry Windling, an acclaimed writer of folklore and fantasy fiction and David Wyatt, a leading illustrator of books. In a ceremony at the Big Red Sofa on Saturday the winners were presented with their prizes by Alan Lee and David Wyatt. After the ceremony David Wyatt said the judges were deeply impressed with the effort the children had put in. He said: ?Not only had they produced wonderful art, stories and sculptures but many were presented in an interesting way with add-ons containing extra snippets about their creations.? Justine Stone, headteacher at Chagford School, said the children had been truly inspired by the competition. ?Mythology is on the school curriculum but putting the curriculum to a real life project leads to better quality of work. This really engaged the children. One of the nice things about it was the variety in the children?s work, clay models, pictures and stories, all produced from their imaginations.? The winning entries were produced by Joe Knight, Lily Earp, Joana Butler, Cameron Tippett, Martha Hutchinson, Luke Combe and Alice Rubbra and were displayed at the Big Red Sofa over the weekend. l Pictured above are judges Alan Lee and David Wyatt.
