Westinsure Devon Premier Cup
second round
Okehampton Argyle 1
Topsham Town 5
WITH both clubs in the bottom half of their respective leagues, this was one cup tie that could have gone either way.
Unfortunately for Argyle, although the Sandercock brothers were back from holiday and injury, a toe injury to Stuart Cann and Lloyd Chapman unavailable left the side stretched to the limit.
The first half was evenly contested with Argyle's best chances falling to Robbie Miller and Steve Hackett, but both just off target.
At the other end, Shaun Sandercock pulled off several excellent saves, plus some fine defending by Mike Vernon and James Williams, to help keep the scores level at half-time.
Ten minutes into the second half, an Argyle attack provided a dangerous cross into the penalty box, where defender Mel Pinn handled the ball accidentally. But despite protests, a penalty was awarded. With the calmness of a veteran James Williams stepped up to blast the ball into the back of the net.
It did not take Topsham long to equalise, missing two good chances before Adam Carpenter broke through to score in the 63rd minute.
After forcing a corner, Mel Pinn joined the forwards to claim their second goal, forcing the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
Argyle's defence went to pieces and Topsham took control for the rest of the half. Further goals from Adam and Danny Carpenter plus another five minutes from the end by Ian McCurran sealed their victory and a place in the third round of the cup.
This week Okehampton are at home again, taking on Westexe Rovers in the first round of the East Devon Senior cup, kick-off 2.30pm.
