OPMs 3 Tavistock 27 IN their first game for three weeks Tavistock first team avenged an early season defeat when they beat OPMs at Elburton on Saturday. Tavistock had the advantage of the slope and fierce wind in the first half and needed to get to the break with a sizeable lead knowing they would be facing the elements in the second half. Tavistock started brightly and kept OPMs pinned deep in their own half with some forceful driving where Jake Phillips was prominent playing his first competitive league game as a number eight. Tavistock opened the scoring after ten minutes with a try from second row Andy Hunt, who in addition had an excellent all round game. The lead was extended soon after. OPMs were penalised for a high tackle on fly half Josh Sutton and he slotted the penalty. Midway through the half flanker Will Brown was put into acres of space and he galloped over near the posts for a try, Sutton converted. Tavistock knew that the fifteen lead might not be enough and pressed for another score before half time. This eventually came two minutes before the break. From an attacking scrum the ball was moved right and winger Joe Lane scored wide out. Facing the wind and slope in the second half the Tavistock defence stood firm. The midfield was secured by skipper Duncan Law and Mike Lyddon and around the fringes of the scrum Paul Greenhill ensured that no breaks were made. This excellent defence restricted OPMs to a single penalty goal after ten minutes of the half. With just over ten minutes remaining Tavistock lost prop Rob Monk to the sin bin but this encouraged them to increase their efforts and to finish the stronger of the two sides.
