MORE than 1,000 young people in West Devon who have celebrated their 18th birthdays this year are being urged to make use of their first opportunity to vote in the forthcoming local elections.
The Electoral Commission is keen to increase participation among young people, after some very disappointing turnouts.
In the 2001 general election, MORI estimated only 39 % of 18-24 year olds voted, with turnout in local elections usually even lower.
Nicole Smith, the commission?s director of policy, said: ?Local elections decide how things such as schools, hospitals and transport will be run - all of which affect young people. They have a real part to play in shaping their community.?
