West Devon Schools 12 Devon U18s 44 SUNDAY saw the inaugural match for the newly formed West Devon Schools rugby squad as they took on the Devon U18s squad at Kelly College. The West Devon Squad is made up of the strongest players from Kelly College, Okehampton College and Tavistock College, providing quality fixtures and opportunities for those involved to be seen by county and club selectors. Following some pre-season warm up matches and training sessions the WDS fielded a team that had representatives from all three colleges from the West Devon region. The match was keenly contested in the opening 30 minutes with Devon U18s looking quicker and sharper at the break down, whilst the WDS looked threatening out wide. After an exchange of tries, where Tim McCreadie, the loosehead prop, scored the first ever point for WDS, Devon began to take some manner of control. There were plenty of changes of personnel for both sides and the pattern of play did break up. Devon took advantage of the extra pace they possessed but the WDS never gave up and Alex McCarthy finished a move to score near the posts to narrow the gap. WDS play the U16s Devon squad, a return fixture with the county U18s, Newquay Trethervas and Downside School in Somerset before December. Training nights are Tuesdays and begin at 5pm at Kelly College.
