WATCHING fireworks is fun for the whole family — but firefighters from West Devon urge local residents to act safely and think of other people and animals.

Tavistock Fire Station commander Tim Smith this week urged residents to think twice and avoid the use of fireworks in their gardens.

He said: 'I would urge everyone to go to the Lions event on November 7 at the Meadows and not to let off their own fireworks in their gardens. This is not only a fire risk but I want people to think about how it affects the domestic animals. Fireworks night can be terrifying for non-understanding creatures.'

Anyone who does hold their own bonfire night party should only buy BS 7114 British standard fireworks from a reputable dealer. Follow instructions exactly when lighting fireworks and never return to one once it has been lit.

Pet owners should make sure their animals are safely indoors during their event.
