THE team behind Sticklepath Fireshow, which was cancelled in 2013, is looking for help from the community to resurrect the event in 2014.
Last year's show, which would have been the 30th anniversary of the event, was cancelled following a number of difficulties throughout the year — but the team who have been behind previous shows are hopeful it can come back with a bang this year.
Among the issues that plagued organisers in 2013 were a shortage of quality waste timber to build the show's set and stage, and finding enough volunteers and committee members to stage the show.
The team behind the event is hopeful that new ideas and new people will build on the enthusiasm, skills and knowledge gained from years gone by to reinvigorate and even transform the event which has been an integral part of village life for many years.
Daisy Lewis, volunteer co-ordinator, said: 'To help engage local groups and organisations who may wish to help, committee members and volunteers are offering to come and give presentations at their regular meetings throughout February and March.'
Daisy said the volunteers would be able to explain exactly why the fireshow is so important to the local communities of Sticklepath and Okehampton, and give more information about ways groups can get involved.
She said: 'If you think you, or your organisation, may be able to help, then get in touch.
'If you want to see the country's most unique bonfire night event happen in your very own community in 2014, why not make a New Year's resolution you will keep this year — contact us now, and help to resurrect this unique local community event.'
The cancellation of last year's show saw the end of one of the best firework celebrations in the country.
Held at the National Trust's Finch Foundry field, the event has attracted up to 3,000 visitors in the past, although 2012 saw a dip in visitor numbers.
As well as a firework display, there is a dramatic production, taking Guy Fawkes on an adventure before he ends up on the bonfire.
Sticklepath Fireshow is primarily a charity which also runs summer and autumn creative workshops for children, providing them with fun activities and learning opportunities during their school holidays.
Without further help though, the fireshow's annual general meeting, planned for either March or April, is likely to result in the winding up of the charity in its current form.
