A FIRE involving approximately 3,000 round bales of hay broke out at the Highampton farm of farmer Willy Cleave last Thursday. The call was received at 7.30am and the stack of bales were well alight upon arrival at Burdon Farm. Fire appliances from Hatherleigh, Holsworthy and Okehampton attended and a water bowser from Barnstaple was also deployed. Firefighters used two breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters were at the scene for much of the day as three mechanical diggers were used to check the stack of bales for any potential hotspots. They remained at the scene for most of the day making sure no further fires broke out.
