FIRE officers are warning children not to play with lighters or any naked flames after a barn fire in East Cornwall last Friday destroyed part of a building and 900 bales of hay.

Three fire appliances from Callington and Launceston and a water carrier from Bodmin

attended the blaze which occurred just after 6pm.

Callington fire station officer Kevin Rookley said three ten and eleven year old boys had been playing with a lighter when it ignited the fire.

?This could have been a very serious incident if, for instance, one of the children?s legs had become stuck in amongst the bales of hay,? he said.

Crews were at the scene until midnight fighting the fire which destroyed a third of the building and the 900 bales stored inside.

The children fled the building before the fire took hold.
