WEST Street in Tavistock was closed by firefighters last Thursday (July 2) after a fire was reported at The Tavy Friar chip shop.

Fire appliances from Tavistock and Yelverton were called to the premises at 73 West Street just before 9.20am.

On arrival crews confirmed there was a fire involving a commercial chip fryer on the ground floor of the property. The fire had also spread to the ventilation system and caused further fire damage to the mains water supply, which caused heavy flooding to the ground floor.

The crews used four sets of breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and one compressed air foam branch to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters believe the fire was accidental.
