Newton Abbot U14s 37
Tavistock U14s 27
DESPITE losing, Tavistock put up their best performance of the season. Their forwards won more than half the possession in set-piece scrums with fast hooking by Peck and clean ball from lineouts through good jumping by Aaron Churchill.
In rucks and mauls Tavistock often won quick ball which gave the backs space to be inventive. Fly half Ewan McCall scored twice, once by kicking over the heads of Newton Abbot's back and collecting, and the second through strong direct running to touch down under the posts.
Damian Dee at outside centre scored in the corner after outpacing the opposition centre and wing.
In the second half. intelligent kicking by Ewan into space allowed Daniel to kick on and drop on the ball just before the deadball line.
Defensively, Jimmy Hubbard put in some trademark low tackles. Hammy, captain, ran tirelessly and secured much second phase ball and deserved his man of the match tribute.
Training this week starts at 6pm on Thursday at Sandy Park. This Sunday the match is away; details to be provided on Thursday at training.

CONTINUING their fine form, Tavistock completed a double over a strong Newton Abbot.
Tavistock started with some new faces. The combined strength of the team was shown in depth with newcomer Culvert out-scrummaging his opposite number, and the improved accuracy of Robinson's lineout throws combining with the lineout dominance of Leeson who justly won man of the match.
In the new back row, O'Neill provided some storming runs on the blind side that were supported by the tearaway flank forwards of Bancroft and Smerdon.
With Lane at outside centre Tavistock soon had their first score on the board when he crossed in the corner after outflanking the opposition.
The new half back pairing of Thompson and Milligan started to click in the second half, producing outstanding attacking. One move saw a well controlled maul turn into an attacking run for Lashbrook to claim the second Tavistock try.
Lane scored the final try to complete the fine win.

WITH several members of the regular squad absent, this result against a Newton Abbot side who had beaten Tavistock at the start of the season was achieved by determination and concentration in defence.
From the kick-off Newton Abbot put their hosts under sustained pressure for several minutes before Tavistock were able to gain possession. A strong run saw new recruit Jack Morgan make good ground before releasing the ball to Elliot Hoyte who split the opposition defence to put the home side into an early five-point lead.
Newton Abbot still seemed to have the upper hand and despite defending strongly, a good move across the field resulted in a try for the visitors.
The conversion meant Tavistock trailed by two points at the end of the first half.
The second half started in much the same manner with Tavistock soaking up enormous pressure on their line.
Thanks to excellent work from the forward pack, including Charlie Hubbard in an unfamiliar role, Tavistock were able to get clean ball from most of the scrums and good handling in the backs enabled Philip Snell to break through and score again for the home side.
Try-saving tackles were made by several players, including Christopher Brindle, also playing in his first full game.
With less than a minute to play the result was sealed by a well judged kick from Morgan which cleared the Newton Abbot backs. Morgan's pace enabled him to gather the ball and cross the line.

FROM the kick-off Tavistock were immediately into gear, building a 25-point lead with three fine tries by Rhys Davis and single tries for Jamie Stephens and Jonty Newton.
At half-time substitutions gave some of the less experienced players an opportunity to play against some strong Newton Abbot running.
Newton Abbot started to close the gap with a try, following a number of missed tackles by Tavistock.
Fiona McCall went close to scoring in the corner following a powerful drive by Tavistock, then Sam Northmore ran through the Newton Abbot defence for a good score.
Newton Abbot replied with three quick tries, despite good tackles by McCall, Rory Kirkland and Felix Davies.
Connor Williams powered through to make the score 35-20.
Newton Abbot scored again to reduce the deficit further and Thomas Russon made a try-saving tackle in the corner.
In the final minute Jake Backway drove into the corner for a try.

THE U7s played out two exciting games in a tight encounter. Both sides defended well with Zak Brinkhurst, Tom Jackman and Gavin Ball prominent in defence for the home side before Daniel Dobie scored the first of two excellent tries to break the deadlock.
Matthew Dobie and Alex Furguson were dangerous in attack and with further scores from Nick Piper, following a surging run, and Chris Chapman, with his dazzling break bringing a first try for the club, a draw was a fair result.
The second game was equally entertaining. First-timers Christian Hodges and Lawrence Harrison slotted in well as older hands Charlie Carter and Nick Jory worked hard to break down the visitors' defence.
With the game scoreless at half-time due to determined defensive work from David Southey and Edward Brain, Tavistock probed in the second period with the nimble Adam Williams always looking to cause a threat. Harry Snowden ensured the game ended with honours even as he crowned a fine performance with two tries and won player of the match.
This Sunday home against Liskeard, meet at the club at 10am.
