WHITCHURCH Wayfarers enjoyed a pair of excellent results this weekend, both in rain reduced fixtures. The first XI travelled to Exeter Civil Service with a side composed of five under 18s and some older, more experienced heads. Fielding first, Whitchurch restricted Civil to 158 for 5 off a reduced allocation of 31 overs ? Forbes top scoring with 54no. In reply Woodrow and Gray both scored unbeaten half centuries, as Whitchurch cruised to a 10 wicket win and 17 valuable league points. Results, affected by the weather elsewhere, still leave Whitchurch with an outside chance of promotion. Meanwhile, the seconds went a long way to preserving their position in the C division with a deserved win over Plymouth Civil Service. Much of the praise for this victory goes to all members of the team, who worked hard to dry the square enough, to enable the game to be played. Playing a reduced match of 36 overs a side, Civil batted first and started well with Walaskowski making 39, as they rattled along to 70 for 1 off 13 overs. The introduction of Elliott (2 for 33) and Daymond (3 for 16) turned the tide back in favour of Whitchurch. Heatley took three catches and with Tamblin (2 for 24) mopping up the tail, Civil collapsed to 143 all out, despite a belligerent 23 from Cross. With 40 overs to score the runs, Whitchurch started unsteadily, losing two early wickets to Lisney (2 for 24). A partnership of 73 between Heatley (29) and Chappell restored oder. Williams bowled tidily taking 2 for 27, as Whitchurch endured a brief wobble, before Chappell completed his half century and bludgeoned the winning runs, to finish 73 not out. Whitchurch took maximum points from this victory and next week make the long journey to Bideford, whilst the first eleven entertain Hatherleigh.
