AFTER a six-week Christmas break, the quarter-finals of the South West of England Open Winter Foursomes competition resumed at Yelverton Golf Club on Sunday.

Wet conditions overnight and blustery winds made play difficult, but the course was in good condition and some fine golf was still enjoyed.

The father and son combination of John and Alan Gawman, from Tavistock, had to withdraw from the competition, which gave the China Fleet team of Darren Mallafre and Mark Philp an easy route to the semi-finals.

The youngest competitor remaining in the competition, Joe Yorke, with partner Tom Squire (aged 18), continued their steady progress, winning 1 up against Stuart Smith and Barry Megson of Holsworthy.

The two remaining professionals in the competition both won their matches to set up a show down for the £1,000 professional?s prize in the next round.

China Fleet assistant professional, Nick Horrocks, with partner Adam Bridgewater, beat the father and son combination of Terry and Chris Cook 2 and 1.

Another father and son combination of Martin Ruth, the Torquay professional, and son Jonathan, beat the Stover pairing of Jason Hampton and Jo Hicks-Beach, the last remaining lady in the competition, 4 and 2.

The plate competition started its knockout phase, and there were wins for the Yelverton team of Graham Plumb and David Wright.

Another Yelverton pair, Ian Cuthbert and Tony Rushbrooke, also used their local knowledge well, and the young Staddon Heights pairing of Andrew Place and Ben Lisney did well to book a place in the semi-finals and will meet Mark Butcher and Jason Brooks from Torquay in the semifinals, to be held on January 25.
