VILLAGERS celebrated a special day in the history of Bratton Clovelly last weekend, when the Old School Room was officially re-opened after a major fundraising and refurbishment project.

The old school, built in 1837, has been closed for several years on safety grounds. A fundraising campaign was launched three years ago to try and bring the building back into use having raised the incredible sum of £120,000, the room is now warm, safe and comfortable thanks to new windows, a heating system and extensive work on the fabric of the building.

Bratton Clovelly resident Philip Worth said the official opening went very well, with more than 100 people enjoying a buffet supper, auction and raffle, with music provided by What Crisis.

Considering we are a spread-out parish of only 400 people, I think it was a great turn-out, he said.

Bookings are now being taken for the room, which can accommodate up to 50 people.

Phili said: Its a lovely room, right in the middle of the village, and its a lovely little building. Five years ago you put on your thermals and a duffel coat when you used it, now, with under floor heating, its lovely.

We had to fight very hard to prove ownership and we have been very well supported in this respect by the Charities Commission funding wise we were also very well supported by the Lottery.

Its now available for the benefit of the community, hopefully for the next 100 years.
