THE last day of trading in Tavistock Pannier Market this century takes place tomorrow (Friday).
Despite concern expressed by town councillors, the market will not be open between Christmas and New Year — the next time the market opens will be on Tuesday January 4.
Town clerk Roger Howard said: 'We have only got about 23 people who wanted to trade and that's not viable.'
The decision to close the market between Christmas and New Year was taken last month — after councillors complained the gap in trade was too long, further letters were sent to traders giving them a further opportunity to book tables. Only 22 traders wished to work on December 29, with 71 not requiring tables, and 23 wanted to trade on December 30.
