Bodmin Trophies Duchy League Division Three
Bere Alston United 4
Lanreath 3
BERE played some of their best football of the season in the first half. Mike Curtis found himself clear of the Lanreath defence but blazed his shot high and wide. But within five minutes, Bere were in front as Dan Follett rose to meet Zac Beesley's cross and send his glancing header past Lanreath keeper Jamie Castle.
Zac Beesley had a glorious opportunity to increase Bere's lead when he intercepted an attempted back pass but dwelt too long on the ball. Mike Curtis was unlucky to see his thundering drive cannon off the crossbar and had another goalbound effort well saved.
Dan Follett headed over from six yards after good work down the right from Mark Wheeler and from another Wheeler cross Lee Howells headed Bere into a 2-0 half time lead with his first goal of the season.
But as good as Bere were in the first half, they were poor at the beginning of the second and a revitalised Lanreath were soon level with goals from Bradley Powell and Craig Walton.
Zac Beesley sent Mike Curtis clear and he rounded the keeper to restore Bere's lead only for Lanreath to make it 3-3 within five minutes. If Bradley Powell's goal was good then Dan Lawrence's was better as he robbed Nathan Harvey on the half- way line and proceeded unchallenged, finishing with a wonderful strike from 30 yards into the top corner. With a draw looking likely, Bere substitute Darren Smalley's great run was halted by a lunging challenge, Mike Curtis despatched the resultant penalty with aplomb. Smalley's goal line clearance secured Bere's victory, which lifts them to fifth place in the league.
Man of the match: Mike Curtis. Next match: March 28 home to Torpoint Athletic — KO 2.30pm.
