The nativity service in Bere Ferrers had a different look this year, as it took place outdoors on Christmas Eve.

Due to covid concerns over the large number of people who normally attend the two nativity services in St Andrew’s Church, it was decided to have the nativity at different locations in the village.

Starting outside the Church Hall, the story unfolded with children and some adults dressed for their parts, and carols accompanied by the church organist on a recorder.

The group of around 70 adults and children moved to the social club car park and then to the war memorial, finishing with the crib scene at the lych gate at the church.

The Tavy Tars led one of the carols and sang Mary’s Boy Child. One constant from previous years was the presence of Arabella the donkey.

With only occasional light rain, the event proved popular, and ended with mulled wine or juice and gifts for the children.

On December 17 there was a joyous evening of carol singing outside Bere Ferrers Social Club (BFSC) by the beautifully decorated tree with a clear sky and bright full moon.

Despite frozen fingers Cathy Sirey played keyboard and Rob Smith guitar, which helped bring villagers together and in good voice.

The Tavy Tars added their energy and sang a Christmas Shanty. The BFSC brought out hot mince pies and mulled wine to warm everyone up.

A total of £125 was raised for Children’s Hospice South West.
