A NEW £1.56-million housing development for adults with learning disabilities or mental health problems was formally opened in Tavistock last Wednesday. The block of 14 one bedroom apartments was officially opened by Tavistock resident Sheila Fenner ? the building has been named Robin Fenner House, in memory of her husband, a former town mayor and West Devon borough councillor who died in 2004. Mr Fenner was involved in many charities and community organisations and was chairman of the local branch of Mencap ? a charity dear to his heart. Pulling the curtains to reveal a commemorative plaque inside the building, Mrs Fenner thanked everyone who had worked so hard to make the project possible ? and for naming it on behalf of her husband. ?It is very much appreciated and he would have been delighted ? thank you,? she said. Fenner House was developed as a partnership project between Devon Community Housing Society, West Devon Borough Council, the county council, social services, Devon Supporting People and the Housing Corporation. Jeremy Robinson, chairman of Devon Community Housing Society, paid tribute to the tremendous support shown by all the partners in the project, which has enabled adults with learning or physical disabilities to live independently, aided by part time carers. The building includes community facilities, a laundry, a warden?s office, full disabled access and an alarm system. It was constructed by contractors Rok over an 18-month period, said Mr Robinson. ?It is a difficult site ? it has four storeys and two accesses, but I think it has turned out extremely well and was very quickly let,? he said. Cllr Jayne Hill, mayor of West Devon, said the ability to live independently would have a huge impact on the lives of present and future tenants at Robin Fenner House. ?This building is positive witness as to how when agencies come together to pool resources, a little bit goes a very long way. ?I think all these agencies need a pat on the back for creating such a great project for people that need support ? thank you on behalf of the residents of West Devon,? said Cllr Hill.
