Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
I think I'm suffering a little jet lag after last week's early starts; they make morning swimming training seem like a lie in! I started the week with a 2.30am alarm call to make it from Bath to Exeter for my first ever solo presenting on BBC Devon Radio, luckily the excitement kept me awake. I couldn't complain at the unsociable hour as I was incredibly privileged to have such an opportunity, even if slightly in at the deep end. It was a steep learning curve and I just hope the listeners of the early show stuck with me; Friday was much smoother than the start of the week, but I have a long way to go.
After my poor performance at the Europeans I was given some extra recovery time — this teamed with my radio show commitments meant I had more than 24 hours at home in Devon. I used this opportunity to catch up with friends and family — I was almost a lady of leisure going out for lunch four days in a row. Oh, and obviously I fitted in some shopping! Having splashed out a little at the beginning of the week on the Bath high street I found myself returning a few items by the following weekend. This was all thanks to some great finds in Tavistock's own charity shops. Yes you heard me right — I managed to get six items for a total of £6 including two shirts that were so similar to my high street purchases, just a 40th of the price!
I know I spend a lot of time on the motorway but the ten hours in my car on Friday has to be a record. I admit I am guilty of laughing at people trying to get past Birmingham on a Friday afternoon but with a 'hen do' in the Lake District I didn't have much choice. I was lucky I had a friend to share the driving although at one point we covered 60 miles in three hours! However it was worth it as I had a lovely, relaxed weekend.
