Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
NEXT year is certainly going to be a spectacle at the London Olympics; anyone with modern pentathlon or equestrian tickets will get to experience the magnificent setting in Greenwich Park.
I felt privileged to have the opportunity to compete at such a venue in last weekend's test event and World Cup Final. It turned out to be a test event not only for the many volunteers and competition officials but also for me. The week preceding was certainly busier than I intended. I landed back from Font Romeu to head directly to an interview with a London paper; thankfully there was no photographer this time. That was my third of the week having spoken on the phone with other journalists while in France including one for an article from the London shoot a few weeks ago. As a result of these well received publications I was certainly worried I'd set myself up for potential embarrassment in front of the home crowd and friends and family who'd come to support; thankfully I delivered an adequate performance.
This is a great time of year for British sport. Last week alone saw the UK host several international sporting events including the motor racing at Silverstone, athletics in Birmingham, eventing in Greenwich to name but a few. With the Olympics just around the corner we will be hosting many more similar events, for example the European Fencing championships in Sheffield next week and then, more importantly, Pentathlons European championships at the end of the month in Kent. With all this excitement building I need to learn from this weekend's performance and get my head down for some more hard training.
