Heather Fell, Olympic modern pentathlete silver medalist, writes about her life 'on and off' the track.
I HAVE decided that my view of commuting might have been a little rose tinted.
I had my third trip to London in as many weeks but this time by car, and across to the east of the city. Not only is it much further than you think, it's also longer than the Sat Nav predicts! Luckily I had allowed for London traffic and its grumpy drivers. When I found myself innocently in the wrong lane I asked politely to be let across, this I discovered doesn't work - it's survival of the bravest! I just hope I haven't brought my London driving traits home with me.
This week was sandwiched with two rather incomparable running races. Something must be working as I ran a personal best in a 3K track race on Monday night, completely unexpected after my toe injury and for this time of year. Then on Sunday it was time to get dirty, running for Tavistock in the Westward League cross-country. After the recent rain it really was a mud bath and with the extreme hills at Bovey Tracey it was true cross-country, the way it should be!
In between my competing I had the chance to spectate, the choice was the races or rugby. Luckily I opted for the local option and supported Exeter Chiefs in a tremendous victory over Harlequins. It was after this that I heard the terrible news from Newbury, where two horses were sadly electrocuted — my heart goes out to all those involved in the tragedy.
