TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club members were delighted to hear that club captain Mike Allen and member Clive Jago have been selected to represent Devon County section seven in their Coronation Cup match against section four, which is the Exeter area of the county.
Mike is also honoured by being nominated as captain of the section seven team for the match.
The men's section played two games during last week, winning one and losing the other. Tuesday's home game against Lee Moor resulted in a 105-51 win for Tavistock who won all four rinks played to complete the double against their opponents, having beaten them away earlier in the season.
Winning teams were skip Bernie Downs and his team of Vic Doidge, Geoff Cork and Malcolm Bloomer, who won 22-17; skip Der Saunders saw his team of Ray Meneer, John Smith and Norman Paramor win 26-13, while skip Eric Stevens led his squad of Pat Sykes, Roy Northam and Tony Coombs to a 23-12 victory.
Club captain Mike Allen and his team of Phil Jury, Rob Bowhay and Colin Craven won 32-9.
Thursday saw the men come down to earth with a bump when they faced a strong Civil Service team and lost 53-81, with only skip Mike Allen leading his team of Derek Bradford, Colin Craven and Rob Bowhay to victory (21-15).
Skips Eric Stevens (12-21), Der Saunders (10-24) and Phil Jury (10-21) all saw their teams lose.
Tavistock won Wednesday's three-rink triples match against Chagford, 53-31, thanks to winning two of the three rinks.
Skip Der Saunders and his team of Ernie Piper and Dorice Hicks won 17-8 and skip Betty Browse saw her team of Joan Solly and Ray Meneer won 23-8.
Skip John Smith and his team of Jenny Alderidge and Charlie Cummings lost 13-15.
Tuesday saw the ladies' section facing local rivals Bere Alston in a friendly fixture which Tavistock won 62-47, thanks to a good win on the rink skipped by Jean Flay, who led her team of Gill Saunders, Pauline Finn and Yvonne Meneer to a 26-9 victory.
Skip Betty Browse and her team of Marlene Paramor, Audrey Northam and Jill Lacayo drew 19-19, while skip Marion Allen saw her team of Dorice Hicks, Joan Northey and Hazel Lovell lose 17-19.
The ladies' section saw Thursday's game against Civil Service Reds cancelled due to torrential rain making Tavistock's roads impassable, but managed to play Friday's triples game against City Bus which they lost 38-58.
Skip Betty Browse and her team of Marlene Paramor and Dorice Hicks went down 14-18.
Skip Hazel Lovell and her team of Val Southern and Jill Lacayo lost 9-25, while skip Marion Allen and her team of Anne Doidge and Joan Northey fought out a creditable 15-15 draw.
Saturday saw Tavistock members journey to the Bradworthy club in Barnstaple, only to see the match fall foul of the weather when it was curtailed with ten ends completed.
