TAVISTOCK'S annual steam fair is one of the first casualties of the town's enhancement scheme — this year's event has been postponed because of disruption to Bedford Square.
The organisers have decided to put off the fair, due to take place on June 6, until the end of September even though the move will cost the committee extra money.
Committee chairman Ian Lewis said: 'The whole objective of the steam fair is to give visitors, exhibitors and the steam engines' drivers the opportunity to enjoy Tavistock and all that it has to offer in a safe, comfortable and friendly environment.
'With the disturbance that these works are likely to cause, the committee feels its aims, particularly those of safety and comfort, would be unattainable on the day.'
All the fun of the fair will take place on Sunday, September 26.
'Whilst we regret having to take this action, cancellation was never an option for we believe that the Tavistock Steam Fair is a significant occasion in the town's calendar.' said Mr Lewis.
The committee said it hoped the works will have been completed by the new date.
'The change will involve us in some additional expenditure but that is perhaps a small price to pay to ensure we do not risk people's safety or add to the inconvenience that the works will undoubtedly be causing in June,' Mr Lewis added.
