I AM appalled at the action taken in making redundant all of the advice session supervisors in the Okehampton and Tavistock CABs (the only paid posts). As a previous advice supervisor at the Tavistock Bureau for nine years (until I retired in 2013) I know from experience how vital this role is in the smooth running of a small bureau, especially as in the case of Tavistock with no manager or other support on site. Volunteers come from all walks of life, most have served in important positions in other careers and bring a wealth of experience from their respective fields but still need help and on the spot guidance of an experienced advice supervisor to guide them through the complexity of law on such diverse subjects such as health, education, benefits claims, housing debt etc, all of which are constantly changing. A supervisor at the end of a telephone or email cannot adequately deal with several office queries at the same time, which will inevitably cause delays and insufficient attention and time given to each individual problem leading to incorrect advice. I must endorse the action taken by the local volunteers in support of their supervisors, all of whom are known to me as highly dedicated trained experienced and efficient supervisors with their staff and clients' interests at heart. I fail to see why Mr Davis and his trustee board feel that West Devon's Citizens should be expected to tolerate an inferior service to that previously supplied. I urge Mr Davis and the trustee board to seriously think again over this faulty decision to make all of the West Devon supervisors redundant. I know funding is an issue but perhaps Mr Davis should take a pay cut or find some other way to save funds.
