Lewdown seconds v Buckland
IN a tense and thrilling game, Lewdown second XI beat top of the table Buckland by four wickets with one ball remaining.
On a cloudy day, Lewdown welcomed Buckland to the Recreation Field. Having won the toss Buckland chose to bat on what looked to be a flat wicket.
Lewdown's Devon U15 player Ben Williams bowled with good pace in his first spell, causing problems for the Buckland openers.
The fast outfield gave full value for shots and after 10 overs Buckland had already scored 82 runs without loss.
Mark Gibbs made the breakthrough, bowling Tomkies around his legs. Squire and Martyn took a wicket apiece, as Lewdown gradually took a grip on the innings.
Ben Williams returned to pick up two wickets at the dearth and in doing so, help to restrict Buckland to just 217 for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 40 overs. This was a good effort by Lewdown, as they expected Buckland to post at least 30 runs more. Olly Brown 27, Carl Weekes 30, Nick Hayden 34 and a faultless 91 from Jack Skuse allowed Lewdown touching distance of victory.
A flurry of late wickets caused concern, but Mark Gibbs and Ben Williams hit the required runs in the final over. This was a fine win for Lewdown seconds, building on good recent form.
There is no game for Lewdown second next week followed by another home game the following week versus Milton Abbot.
